NYSC Certificate Saga: Court slates Oct 8 to hear suit against Kemi Adeosun
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 8 to hear a suit asking it to sack the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, from office for not possessing a valid discharge certificate issued by the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

The Chief Judge of the high court, Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, has assigned the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/712/2018, to Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu for expeditious hearing. A constitutional lawyer, Mr. Francis Obalim, had approached the court, praying for an order quashing and setting aside Mrs. Adeosun’s appointment as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari, after Premiumtimes reported in July that she forged her discharge certficate.

Since the report was released, Adeosun has not come out to deny the allegation.

The constitutional lawyer, Francis Obalim, through his counsel, Johnmary Jideobi, has also asked the court for an order of perpetual injunction, restraining FG from further according a Ministerial status to the Adeosun until she presents a valid certificate of discharge regularly issued by the NYSC. He wants the court to compel the 1st defendant to refund forthwith to FG, through the Treasury Single Account domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria, all the salaries, emoluments, allowances and such other benefits she has enjoyed since her resumption as a Minister in 2015.
Other defendants in the suit are the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and Clerk of the Senate.
According to the court papers, the lawyer prayed the court to determine
“Whether upon an intimate reading and complete understanding Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the 1st Defendant is qualified to be employed by the Federal Government of Nigeria either as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or in any other capacity whatsoever without first presenting a valid discharge certificate issued by the National Youth Service Corp? As well as, “Whether the appointment of the 1st Defendant by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria] and the subsequent confirmation of same by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are not a nullity and therefore liable to be quashed and set aside being acts done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in violation of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended? Upon determination of the questions, he sought for,
“A declaration of this Honourable Court upon an intimate reading and complete understanding of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the 1st Defendant is NOT qualified to be employed by the Federal Government of Nigeria either as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or in any other capacity whatsoever without first presenting a valid discharge certificate issued by the National Youth Service Corp.
“A declaration of this Honourable Court that the appointment of the 1st Defendant by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria] and the subsequent confirmation of same by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are a nullity and therefore liable to be quashed and set aside being acts done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended?
“An order of this Honourable Court quashing and setting aside the appointment of the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the same being an act done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended “An order of this Honourable Court quashing and setting aside the confirmation of the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria carried out by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the same being an act done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. “An order of perpetual injunction of this Honourable Court restraining the Federal Government of Nigeria from further considering, nominating, appointing, screening and or confirming the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other government position howsoever named or described until she presents a valid certificate of discharge regularly issued by the National Youth Service Corp in view of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended”. Over 100 communities in Niger State have been submerged following the overflow of the River Niger. Farms and houses have also been destroyed, leaving residents of the affected communities homeless.

Although there are no reports of casualties, the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, has visited the communities with other members of the state executive to find ways of relocating the residents.

This comes weeks after the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issued a flood alert for seven states Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, and Bayelsa on the floodplains of River Niger.

The agency also warned that the steady rise in water levels and weather forecast in the coming weeks have put Nigeria at risk of witnessing a recurrence of catastrophic flooding similar to what it witnessed in 2012. It, therefore, called on 12 states to be on alert with Edo, Taraba, Benue, Adamawa, and Rivers states joining the seven states previously put on alert.

CCTV footage showing moment an Uber driver was robbed in Lagos surfaces online
An Uber driver was on Wednesday September 5th, robbed at gunpoint by some criminals in Lagos. According to a police source who spoke with LIB, the driver got a ride request from the said men via the Uber app.

When he arrived at the pickup location, the criminals boarded his vehicle, flashed their guns at him and took him to an ATM in Moloney street in Lagos Island where they feigned they wanted to steal from him.
They however did not take any money from his account, and instead forced him into the boot of his Toyota Corolla 2006 car with registration number GGE 740 ER.

The criminals then drove him to the Third mainland bridge where they dropped him off.

The CCTV footage obtained from a bank, shows the period the criminals took the driver to the ATM.

Four years after she was brutally tortured, starved by her employer, domestic worker graduates with top honours from university

Four years after she was brutally tortured, starved by her employer, domestic worker graduates with top honours from university
A former Indonesian domestic worker, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih graduated cum laude from Sanata Dharma University, four years after sustaining serious injuries inflicted upon her by an abusive employer.
In a heartwarming addendum to a story that sparked international outrage, Sulistyaningsih, who suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her employer four years ago graduated with top honours with a degree in business management last Friday.

In a Facebook post from Friday, the 28-year-old wrote that she was able to pursue her degree thanks to a scholarship by the university.
In the post, she thanked God, the university, friends, family, and a number of migrant worker organizations, and pledged to use her degree to help others.
“God willing I will dedicate my time for the people, and I will continue helping in the collective struggles of those who are oppressed,” she said.
Sulistyaningsih’s nightmare began in 2013 when took up a job as a domestic worker in Hong Kong to earn money to pay for university tuition.
At the hands of her employer, Law Wan-tung, she suffered abuse including being fed nothing but bread and rice, sleeping only four hours a day, not being given a day off, and being beaten so badly that she was knocked unconscious.

Her plight sparked international outrage in 2014 after she was admitted to hospital in Indonesia in a critical condition, and pictures of her injuries were made public.
She became the face of a movement determined to force change for working conditions for Hong Kong’s domestic workers.
Sulistyaningsih’s employer Law Wan-tung was convicted of grievous bodily harm, assault, criminal intimidation and failure to pay wages in 2015 .
Law was sentenced to six years in jail, and was ordered to pay around HK$809,000 (US$103,000) in damages for the “inhumane” abuse, which lasted for eight months.
Sulistyaningsih told a Hong Kong court in December how she lived on nothing but bread and rice for months, slept only four hours a day and was beaten so badly by her employer Law Wan-tung that she was knocked unconscious.
During the six-week trial, prosecutors said Law, 44, turned household items such as a mop, a ruler and a clothes hanger into “weapons” against her maids.
Sulistyaningsih hailed the court’s guilty verdict but called for reforms to ensure Hong Kong employers no longer treated domestic workers “like slaves”.
Sulistyaningsih has also said that Indonesia must not shirk its responsibilities to protect its citizens who travel abroad to work.
